A man named Joe Sullivan chose to live in the middle of nowhere for the peace and quiet that comes with rural Mississippi. So, when an injured dog showed up on his porch one day — he was stunned.
Upon closer inspection, Sullivan noticed just how badly injured she was. He picked her up and she immediately nuzzled her head onto his shoulder. It was clear that the poor girl was absolutely exhausted.
The injured dog was covered in cuts and scars; what happened to her, no one will know — but it was something that a dog should never experience or go through. That’s for absolute certainty.
Sullivan wrapped the little girl in a warm blanket, loaded her in the car, and took her to the Animal Clinic of Tippah County located in Ripley, Mississippi. She needed medical attention right away.
Once she got to the vet clinic, the injured dog was treated for worms, hydrated through an IV, and her injuries were inspected. It appeared that she had been hit by a car; she had a fractured hip and nerve damage.
Sullivan’s heart was breaking for the sweet dog, but he was so glad the little girl chose his porch because now she was getting the help she needed. And little did she know — things were just going to get better from there!
Sullivan and vets were determined to bring the injured dog back to health. And that’s exactly what they did. They had feared that the dog might have had puppies that she was leaving behind, but she wasn’t lactating, so they were confident that wasn’t the case.
Sullivan ended up naming the sweet girl Betsy. After she was healed and ready to leave the vet clinic, Sullivan knew that the dog was meant for him. After all — she’s the one that actually chose him.
It’s unsure what her past was like, but we know it wasn’t good. She has scars all over to prove it. In addition to being hit by the car, it is speculated that she was possibly used as a bait dog in a dogfighting ring.
Thankfully — Betsy chose to seek help at the right house. Sullivan was shocked at first, but couldn’t be happier about it now. Her life is completely different than it was the day she showed up.
Not only does the previously injured dog have a brand new human family, but she has dog siblings now too! Sullivan said that normally his dogs aren’t very welcoming of other dogs, but they seemed to love Betsy right away.
Betsy has completely healed physically, and we’re sure she has emotional scars that will last a lifetime. Thankfully — she has a wonderful life in the future with tons of love, safety, and companionship.
